Hauling Safety Guidelines

Calculate Load Weight Accurately (Payload Capacity)

  • Know the actual weight of the equipment being hauled (refer to the manufacturer’s specs or weigh on a certified scale).

  • Include all attachments, fuel, tools, and accessories in total load weight.

  • Factor in tongue weight, which should be 10–15% of the total loaded trailer weight for bumper-pull trailers.

Proper Loading Practices

  • Distribute weight evenly, with approximately 60% of the load over the front half of the trailer.

  • Secure equipment with rated tie-downs using all four corners (at minimum).

  • Use wheel chocks or parking brakes on equipment to prevent shifting.

  • Lower all buckets, booms, or attachments and secure them.

  • Check ramp conditions: Make sure ramps are locked in place and rated for the weight being loaded.

Towing Safety

  • Ensure visibility: Check mirrors, lights, and trailer signals before departure.

  • Drive cautiously: Allow more space for braking, turning, and acceleration.

  • Avoid sudden maneuvers: Sharp turns or abrupt stops can cause trailer sway or load shift.

  • Monitor the trailer during the trip—stop periodically to check tie-downs, tires, and lights.
